Lady Vikings Week 4 Recap
3/9/09 The Hart Co.
Game (Lakeside v. Hart Co. AAA #10).
The Vikings rolled into
Monday taking on Hart Co. who had tremendous size and strength up and down
their roster. A well coached and disciplined team that was looking to knock
off the AAAA #15 ranked Lady Vikings. The Lady Vikings started out the game
a little slow and hesitant in the first half and struggled to put some final
passes together in the attacking half while holding onto a 1-0 lead. The
Lady Vikings got to view a spectacular athlete from Hart Co. who could throw
the ball in from 40 yards away into the goal mouth. After seeing this
amazing talent the Lady Vikings quickly adjusted, but it was too late
because Hart Co. managed to find the back of the net on a great throw to tie
the game up 1-1 before half time. The Lady Viking pulled their heads
together and mustered up some Viking “Pride” and found each other on
numerous occasions despite the strong effort put forth by Hart Co. In the
end the Lady Viking finished the game with a five goal lead and result.

3/13/ 09 The Chamblee
Game (Lakeside v. Miller Grove REGION MATCH).
A cold a misty night was suitable for these two
juggernauts, going at it in a AAAA Region #6 match. Both teams were poised
and ready to play as the match whistle blew, but it was the Lady Vikings who
struck first and took a 1-0 midway through the first half. The Lady Vikings
young defense held together as one unit, but took an unfortunate deflection
from a Lady Bulldog shot that redirected into the back of the net just
before half time to knot the game up 1-1. Refocused and determined to get a
result, the Lady Vikings went back to what they do best and created numerous
chances, but failed to find the back of the net. The Lady Vikings kept
giving Chamblee all they could handle, but the Lady Bulldogs found
themselves in a rare position down the Vikings flank and tried to get a
cross in, but the cross was miss hit by the Lady Bulldogs and found the back
of the net just inside the near post. Clawing and fighting their way back
into the game the Lady Vikings found the back of the net with about 10:00
left in the game from some great individual play. At the end of regulation
the game was a 2-2 tie. Two FIVE minute overtimes were on the slate to be
played to determine a winner from this heavyweight bout. Neither team could
get much going until late in the second OT. The Lady Vikings were poised
and thinking PENALTY KICKS, but the far side official whistle for an
unintentional handball just outside of the 18 yard box with :04 left on the
game clock. Before the kick was taken the game clock expired and 0:00. As
the Lady Viking bench yelled and screamed to get the officials attention
that the kick can not be taken, the official allowed the kick to be taken
and the Lady Bulldogs found the back of the net just inches under the cross
bar. The game ended 3-2.
According to GHSA rules and application only a
penalty kick can be taken after the game clock expires.

Lady Vikings Week 2 Recap
The Paideia Game
(Lakeside v. Paideia AA #7 2/20/2009).
The Lady Vikings took
on the Pythons from Paideia Friday night for their home opener in the brisk
February air. Preparation for Paideia began on Monday with a focus on
position changes, team chemistry and conditioning. Despite the
unpredictable weather, the Lady Vikings remained focused throughout the
week, which led to an excitement within the team and buzz around the school
about the opportunity to knock off the # 7 ranked Paideia Pythons. Kickoff
began shortly after 5:30 and the Lady Vikings came out playing very fast
with strong support play from Connie Park and Madeline Stamps.
The Lady Vikings movement through the midfield sparked some opportunities
early with shots from Katie Welborn and excellent balls delivered
from the flanks from Andrea Thomas and Katie Ray. Robyn
Finley and Nikki Jackson provided sparks of the bench in the
first half to help keep moving the ball through the midfield. With about
:54 seconds in the first half the Lady Vikings were called for an
interesting foul about 30 yards away from the frame of the goal. The
Pythons hit a tremendously played ball near the 18 yard box, which took an
awkward bounce straight to the shooting foot of a Python that found the back
of the net to take a 1-0 at half time.
Despite the great effort
put out in the second half and unique forward play from Rebecca Chambers
, Jessica Jimenez, and a great goal scored by Katie Ray
the Lady Vikings came up just shy of getting a winning result with a 2-1
loss.

of confidence and pride led by Senior Captains Katie Wellborn and Connie
Park. The game was back and forth for most of the game until the Lady
Vikings were called for a foul inside their own box, which resulted in a
penalty kick. Senior keeper Mayaan Schechter stared down her
opponent and played mind games as the Woodward player missed the penalty
kick wide right. Scoring opportunities were exchanged back and forth for
the reminder of game making it an intense game, but in the end, ended in a
0-0 draw.

The Newnan
Game (Lakeside v. Newnan Longhorn Invitational 2/12/2009)
The Lady Vikings
played their second game of the Longhorn Invitational @ North Gwinnett High
School against a physical and pesky Newnan Cougars team. The Lady Viking
came out firing on cylinders by creating multiple chances and creative ball
movement through the midfield from Senior Captain Katie Wellborn and
Freshmen Katherine Marting. The defense held solid with impressive play
from Senior Captain Connie Park, Senior Madeline Stamps, Freshmen Summer
Bader and Junior Melissa Huston. While the defense continued to lock
down any Cougar changes the Lady Vikings attack took advantage of a free
kick opportunity. Katie Wellborn played a great ball into the box
that met Katherine Marting’s head and found the back of the net to
give the Lady Vikings a 1-0 lead with about 20 minutes left in the first
half. Leading at the half the Lady Vikings continued their tough play
meeting the Cougars physical play. The Cougars scored an amazing goal in
the second half with about 30 minutes left in the game that just went past
the Keeper Mayaan Schechter’s reach. The game continued to go back
and forth despite both teams showing signs of fatigue. The Cougars struck
again with a beautiful chip shot that caught the Lady Viking’s by surprise
and just went off of the fingers of Senior Mayaan Schechter’s hand.
The Lady Viking’s finished the game strong with some valiant play from
Samantha Nicholson, Rebecca Chambers, and Jessica Jimenez.
